Role: Data Governance Lead (Alation)

Job Description –
We are seeking a highly skilled Data Governance Lead with hands-on expertise in Alation to lead our data governance initiatives. In this role, you will drive the establishment and enforcement of data governance policies, streamline metadata management, and improve data accessibility across the organization. You will work closely with data stewards, data owners, and stakeholders across departments to establish governance frameworks that support data quality, compliance, and strategic insights.
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead Data Governance Initiatives: Define, implement, and oversee data governance strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure data consistency, accuracy, and compliance.
· Alation Data Catalog Management: Manage and configure Alation as the enterprise data catalog, supporting metadata management, data lineage tracking, and data stewardship initiatives.
· Policy Development and Enforcement: Develop data governance policies, standards, and frameworks that enforce data quality, access control, and regulatory compliance across the organization.
· Data Quality and Stewardship: Partner with data stewards and data owners to implement best practices for data quality management, including data classification, tagging, and validation.
· Data Dictionary Automation: Lead the automation of data dictionary updates and maintain synchronization between Alation and source systems to keep metadata up-to-date and accessible.
· NLP and AI-Driven Governance: Implement NLP and AI solutions to automate metadata enrichment, classification, and natural language summaries, making data assets more accessible and user-friendly.
· Training and Adoption: Develop training materials and conduct workshops to encourage the use of Alation and educate users on data governance best practices, increasing platform adoption.
· Data Lineage and Impact Analysis: Oversee Alation’s data lineage functionalities, providing insights into data dependencies and supporting impact analysis for data changes.
· Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the bridge between technical and business teams, translating data governance requirements into actionable solutions and ensuring alignment across the organization.
· Performance Tracking and Reporting: Develop and manage KPIs for data governance, regularly reporting on progress, data quality improvements, and compliance metrics.
Qualifications:
· Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in data governance, metadata management, or data quality roles, with at least 2 years working with Alation or similar data governance platforms.
· Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in data science, Information Management, Computer Science, or a related field.
· Technical Skills: Strong understanding of Alation functionalities, including metadata management, data lineage, and catalog configuration. Familiarity with SQL and data management tools.
· AI/NLP Exposure: Experience in leveraging NLP and AI technologies within a data governance or metadata management context is a plus.
· Data Governance Expertise: In-depth knowledge of data governance principles, frameworks, and tools, with a track record of successfully implementing governance policies.
· Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner to stakeholders at all levels.
· Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work cross-functionally to achieve organizational goals.
Preferred Skills:
· Data Privacy and Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with data privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA) and experience implementing compliance measures.
· Alation Certifications: Certifications or formal training in Alation or related data governance platforms.
· Advanced Data Management Knowledge: Hands-on experience with data warehousing platforms (e.g., Snowflake, AWS Redshift) and data integration tools.
