Location : Madison WI  (Hybrid 2/3 Days)

Remote or On-site? Candidate MUST be a WI resident or willing to relocate to WI prior to starting the role at their own expense. This is a hybrid position, so on-site work is required some days based on project and operational demands, but WHS is a great place to work right in the heart of downtown Madison and the UW-Madison Campus. Remote work is allowed and encouraged when possible. – expect to be on-site for onboarding – after onboarding, on-site work is expected to be 2-3 days per week but will vary month to month.
Work Environment: This hybrid position requires on-site work based on project and operational demands but allows and encourages remote work when possible. Candidates must be Wisconsin residents or willing to relocate to Wisconsin at their own expense prior to starting the role.
Department Overview: The Information Technology Department at the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) manages the technology and computer infrastructure that supports the agency’s business systems and automation requirements. The IT department implements and maintains systems and web applications crucial for the WHS’s business needs and mission.
Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Chief Information Officer, the Technical Architect designs, implements, and maintains robust and scalable technical solutions. This role emphasizes cloud technologies, digital asset management, and integration strategies, and involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and ensure system performance.
Key Responsibilities:
System Architecture and Integrations:
Architect and oversee integrations between various systems (e.g., e-commerce, CRM, email marketing, POS, DAMS, web platforms).
Develop APIs, middleware, and data pipelines for seamless data flow.
Ensure data consistency and integrity across integrated systems.
Implement and mature a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS).
Create detailed architectural documentation and maintain system architecture integrating key systems (e.g., web CMS, DAM, collections management systems).
Implement a state-of-the-art website integrated with DAMS.
Ensure operational and collections-oriented data is available for reporting via Tableau.
Identify and implement a Digital Preservation solution for collections data and state records.
Plan and design scalable storage architecture for collections growth and preservation.
Request server infrastructure aligning with project requirements and scalability.
Cloud Infrastructure:
Design, implement, and optimize cloud-based solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
Ensure high availability, security, and scalability of cloud services.
Promote automation and streamlined development practices (e.g., CI/CD, DevOps).
Identity and Single Sign-On (SSO):
Define and implement identity management and SSO strategies (e.g., Entra ID, Okta).
Work with security teams to ensure secure authentication and authorization.
Integrate SSO solutions with existing applications.
E-commerce and Point of Sale (POS):
Collaborate with stakeholders to understand e-commerce and retail requirements.
Design and optimize commerce platforms, including payment gateways, analytics, financial reporting, and inventory management.
Architect POS solutions for retail or online sales channels.
Technical Leadership:
Lead software development projects and oversee multiple development initiatives.
Provide architectural guidance to development teams and ensure best practices.
Evaluate change requests and estimate work magnitude.
Stay informed on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
Serve as a lead worker and mentor for developers and engineers.
Advise on system security, access control, and data protection practices.
Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, procedures, and policies.
Collaborate with project managers on cross-agency initiatives.
Conduct cost-benefit analyses for software or hardware solutions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proven experience as a Technical Architect or similar role.
Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
Familiarity with DAM systems, integration patterns, and SSO protocols.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Experience as a Windows System Administrator in an enterprise environment.
Strong knowledge of Windows Server operating systems and Active Directory.
Experience with M365 products (e.g., SharePoint, Teams, Power Platform).
Understanding of network and security principles.
Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work independently and lead a team.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Knowledge of project management methodologies.
Expertise in C#, .NET Core, and the .NET ecosystem.
Understanding of object-oriented design principles (e.g., SOLID, GRASP).
Familiarity with various software architectures (e.g., Clean architecture, DDD, TDD).
Comfortable working in legacy codebases.
Familiarity with version control and CI/CD frameworks.
Knowledge of industry best practices.
Scripting and automation skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python).
Familiarity with security principles.
Research skills for systems issues and products.
Ability to communicate technical ideas effectively.
Effective task prioritization in high-pressure environments.
Ability to master new technologies quickly.
Experience guiding and leading novice systems engineers.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
